Computer skills. As a virtual assistant most of your work will be performed on a computer. You don’t need to be a nerd to work as a virtual assistant, however, having basic computer skills is a must have.  

Word processing or Google document skills. Word processing is one of the primary roles of a virtual assistant. Knowing how to use Microsoft Office or Google documents will make your work easier.

Writing and oral communication skills. As a virtual assistant, your work will involve a lot of communication on behalf of your client. It goes without saying having these skills is crucial to your role.

Love for ongoing learning. If you hate learning, working as a virtual assistant may not be for you. As a virtual assistant, you’ll get to work with different individuals at different levels, with different needs. And you can only be able to handle your clients’ various needs by learning and adapting to their various ways of doing things.

Websites. You don’t need to be a web developer but having basic knowledge on how WordPress works will be an added advantage. The reason why I say WordPress is because most websites run on WordPress. Squarespace and Wix are other options you may want to familiarize with.  

Office Productivity software. Microsoft Office – Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Sheets, Google Docs are some of the frequently used options.

Project Management Software. While you may argue you are not signing up as a project manager and you don’t need this, knowing how these communication platforms work will make it easier to collaborate with your clients. Examples of communication platforms to familiarize with include: Redbooth, Slack, Asana, Evernote and Trello. Email marketing services such as Mailchimp, Constant Contact, MailerLite.
